What is Crimewave?
It has nothing to do with crime. Well, very, very rarely is it about crime. It is the invention of Linette Lao and Mark Maynard, who have been publishing it since 1994. Perhaps the best way to understand CW Usa is to look at some of the subjects we have addressed in the magazine over the years: chicken ice cream, weddings, polka tents, wine, house on the rock, scary motels, freak shows, meat, tumbleweeds, fisticuffs, convenience stores, L.A., Roswell, Lunchables, Elvisfest, and the ordinary details of Mark and Linette's lives. Over the years, we have interviewed such luminaries as Howard Finster, Moe Tucker, Neil Hamburger, Andy Kaufman's best friend Bob Zmuda, David Cross, Half Japanese, Pylon, Daniel Pinkwater, Cat Power, Daniel Johnston and even a close acquaintance of Don Knotts! Linette and Mark live in Ypsilanti, Michigan with their 3 year old daughter Clementine. Read some reviews of Crimewave here.
Crimewave Holiday Cards.
We don't like Christmas cards. We've been making our own for years. This year, we thought that we'd share them with you. We have three to choose from. Two
feature Santa. On one, a bitter old St. Nick declears, "I don't believe in your either." On the other, a considerably more positive Santa offers an encouraging, "I believe in you too." The third card
declares simply, "You make the holidays a little less depressing." It does not feature Santa. Sets of six are $10. (We'll get them out to you ASAP, but you'll need to order soon to get them in time.)
Crimewave 16
This is our first issue since Clementine was born three years ago. With our national distributor out of business, and unable to muster the energy to sell ads, we decided to go back to the fast-cheap-and-out-of-control basics. Light on the proof-reading, and photocopied at Kinko's at 5:00 AM after a few sleepless nights of writing, this issue takes us back to our zine roots. Linette and Mark draw comics on birth and babies, Mark interviews Peter "Columbo" Falk, and Dexter Romwebber (formerly of Flat Duo Jets), a new installment of Let's Ask Skinner, more True Stories from Stupor, a travelogue kept during an exciting trip to the northeast, and a story about a neighbor's abandonned 20 year-old canned vegetables. It almost killed us to put it out, but, now that it's here. Buy a copy for yourself and see what all the fuss is about.
Thanks for coming out to see us at the Winter Shadow Art Fair!
It'll happen again in July 2008 and we hope to see you there!
